China

2008-01-07 (Monday) A group of 57 Chinese dissidents signed an open letter condemning the arrest of Hu Jia, an AIDS and environmental activist, on subversion charges and urged the government to improve human rights ahead of this year’s Olympics.

Iran - United States

2008-01-07 (Monday) In the Strait of Hormuz, five small high-speed vessels believed to be from Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy charged at and threatened to blow up a three-ship U.S. Navy convoy passing near Iranian waters, then vanished as the American ship commanders were preparing to open fire.

Iraq

2008-01-07 (Monday) A double bombing killed at least seven people and wounded 25 Monday outside the Baghdad office of a government agency that cares for Sunni mosques and shrines.

Israel

2008-01-07 (Monday) Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said he would ask President George W. Bush to curb Israel’s West Bank settlements for the sake of peace.
Bush will visit the Middle East this week.

Pakistan

2008-01-07 (Monday) Suspected Islamic militants killed eight tribal leaders involved in efforts to broker a cease-fire between security forces and insurgents. The men were shot in separate attacks late Sunday and early Monday in South Waziristan, a mountainous region close to Afghanistan where militants allied with Al-Qaeda and the Taliban operate.
